8 Steps to Resolve Conflict Constructively

Conflict resolution isn't about determining who is right. It's about understanding what happened, addressing the impact, and finding a constructive path forward.
1. Prepare
Reflect on your perspective, what you need from the conversation, and how your emotions may affect your response. If emotions are high, allow time to cool down.
2. Choose the Right Setting
Find a time and place where everyone can speak openly, respectfully, and without interruption.
3. Establish Ground Rules
Agree to approach the conversation with honesty, respect, active listening, and a willingness to find a solution.
4. Describe the Conflict
Each person explains what happened, how it affected them or others, and what they would like to see change. Focus on observable behaviors rather than personal judgments.
5. Listen and Clarify
Listen to understand rather than to defend your position. Ask questions, clarify what you heard, and identify areas of agreement and disagreement.
6. Explore Solutions
Work together to identify possible solutions. Consider what each person can do differently and what additional support or clarification may be needed.
7. Agree on Next Steps
Establish clear commitments: who will do what, what will change, when it will happen, and how you will measure improvement.
8. Follow Up
Check in after an agreed-upon period. Recognize progress, address remaining concerns, and adjust the plan if needed.
The goal: Move from frustration and blame toward understanding, shared responsibility, and meaningful action.
